Could you please confirm that the JAI is required for converting PDF to image files (and TIFF)? I know this is requried for working with PPTX documents but I seem to be getting errors (NoClassDefFoundError) when trying to convert my PDF documents to images. Is their anything else required?

I would like to inform you that JAI is required to convert PDF to Images. Also that you need the following two Jar files set in your class path: jai_codec.jar and jai_core.jar.
