Excel 97-2003 & 5.0/95 File Format

Hello,

We are currently evaluating an upgrade from Aspose.Excel to Aspose.Cells, but we ran into an odd issue. Aspose.Cells looks like it supports only BIFF8 (Excel 97 and up) and thats ok, but our clients upload files in the Excel 97 - Excel 2003 & 5.0/95 file format. Although that format has both BIFF7 and BIFF8 (since it stores both versions in the file), Aspose.Excel can correctly pull out the Excel 97 one, Aspose.Cells cannot.

Aspose.Cells tosses out a CellsException of "there are BIFF7 records", which, while technically correct, should still be able to do what an earlier version does I would think. Asking hundreds of our clients to change their process of opening and resaving is just not feasible, and using Aspose.Excel for 97-2003 formats and Aspose.Cells for 2007 stuff seems kludgy at best. Any clarification on this would be appreciated

Hi,

Well, that is true as Aspose.Cells supports BIFF8 and greater formats only. I am afraid you need to open those older files (BIFF7 formats) into MS Excel (97-2007) and re-save them to MS Excel Workbook(s).

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Thank you.

Just curious, why was this feature taken out? It seems odd that you would support the excel 97-2003 & 5.0/95 format in Aspose.Excel, but not Aspose.Cells

Hi,

Well, in Aspose.Excel, actually we only support data/formula/style features of the excel 97-2003 & 5.0/95 format.We have no plans to support more features of that format. So we removed it from Aspose.Cells.

Thanks for your understanding.

@DEverhart,

We recommend you to upgrade to latest version of the product which includes support for older BIFF7 (Excel 95/5.0 - 2003 Workbook) formats apart from newer file formats:

Moreover, see the document for supported input and output file formats by Aspose.Cells for your complete reference:
