If we put excel like functionality into your product, =(a1+b1) wont we be infringing Microsoft’s patent? Or has there patent expired?

The patent does not apply to the format in which the formula is entered, but rather the entire formula system within Excel. Therefore, the use of formulas in the mentioned manner would not be a violation of Microsoft's patent.
