Hi,

We are observing many issues with both versions of the Cells library for Java (7.0.2 and 2.5.4). I already have posts for them, this one is for advice.

Here is our use case for Cells:

We have a template Excel file which is supposed to be used to update some info in a database. It contains:

  • 2 sheets with information about how to use the file (same info, but localized in 2 languages). They contain images, cells and comments (which are always visible)
  • 7 sheets which contain "referentials" - lists of values which are used in data validation or formulas, some are filled at runtime, others are static
  • 1 sheet which is a "template" - it is duplicated for each object. It has cells with data validation (values from list with in-cell dropdown active, length limits or custom validation which usually means finding the value in a named list from some "referential" sheet). It has cells with conditional formatting and it has cells with both. It also has merged cells (of various sizes) and one image
  • 1 sheet which is a "summary" sheet of all other sheets. It has formatted cells (not conditional), cells which reference other cells in the duplicated sheets and a couple of hyperlinks (some to other sheets, some http and some mailto).

The order of these sheets is (help, help, summary, template repeated as needed, referentials).

When we fill this template, we perform the following operations:

  • Duplicate sheets (worksheets.addCopy, moveSheet & setName) – only the template sheet gets duplicated
  • Remove sheets (worksheets.removeSheet) – only the template sheet gets removed after it was duplicated
  • Insert/Copy/Remove rows (cells.insertRow, deleteRow, copyRow) – in the summary and template sheets, we have some cells formatted to look like tables and we resize these tables by removing/inserting new rows and copying an formatted row over the inserted rows)
  • Clear ranges (cells.clearRange) – some cells are not available for some “roles”, so their contents and formatting is removed
  • Setting cells values (cell.setValue, cells.importArray) – the cells in the summary and template sheets are filled cell by cell, the cells in the referential sheets are filled with importArray
  • Unlocking cells (style.setLocked) – some cells are already locked in the template. Depending on the “role”, some cells are unlocked.
  • Protecting the worksheets (worksheet.protect) – after filling, the summary and template sheets are protected. Everything is denied, except formatting columns, rows, selecting locked and unlocked cells. The password is not empty.

Our current understanding/assumption is that we can use Cells just to fill the values, and all validations and formatting is automagically updated.

“Times New Roman””>I can give you some examples of strange issues:

  • We had an issue where Excel would crash when saving a filled file. By trial and error, we found that after removing the image from the template sheet, the issue no longer occurred. But reordering the sheets in the template would bring the issue back. Also, we received a new template (no major changes, just look-and-feel) and the issue occurs again, even after removing all images in the file
  • Reordering the sheets in the template made the existing code fail with a class cast exception. We weren't inspired enough to save the stack trace, but the first Aspose entry was for the Cells.insertRows method, it had 3 more entries (all Aspose methods) and then a ClassCastException in some obfuscated class (so 0% chance of me remembering that com.aspose.a.b.c.fd name)
  • Checkboxes were moving over data-validated cells (we worked around it by replacing the checkboxes with yes/no dropdowns)

Are we forgetting something here? We are not doing anything regarding formulas, names, data validation or conditional formatting. Do we have to do something to update them?


I'm asking this because we've done almost all these operations before (the duplication of sheets is new for us), but with less complex files and we haven't had any of the issues we are facing now.

However, we are facing multiple strange issues and wasting lots of time. So maybe a rethink is warranted.

I can give you some examples of strange issues:

  • We had an issue where Excel would crash when saving a filled file. By trial and error, we found that after removing the image from the template sheet, the issue no longer occurred. But reordering the sheets in the template would bring the issue back. Also, we received a new template (no major changes, just look-and-feel) and the issue occurs again, even after removing all images in the file
  • Reordering the sheets in the template made the existing code fail with a class cast exception. We weren't inspired enough to save the stack trace, but the first Aspose entry was for the Cells.insertRows method, it had 3 more entries (all Aspose methods) and then a ClassCastException in some obfuscated class (so 0% chance of me remembering that com.aspose.a.b.c.fd name)
  • Checkboxes were moving over data-validated cells (we worked around it by replacing the checkboxes with yes/no dropdowns)

Please create sample project/ code segments for your mentioned issues. Kindly attach the runnable project/code segments with template Excel files to reproduce the issues on our end. We will look into the issues soon.
