Password-protect presentation modification

Hello,

Is there a way to set a password to MS PowerPoint presentation so it can either be opened in read-only mode or user needs to enter a password to modify. I see a way to fully protect the presentation so one can’t even open it. But its not really what I need, I only want to make it write-protected.

Is there such way?

In MS PowerPoint I can set this password when I do Save-as command, from ‘tools’ menu.

Thanks for considering Aspose.Slides.

We regret to inform you that Aspose.Slides currently does not support encrypted presentation files. Since, the read only files are also encrypted which means write protected, so it is unfortunately not possible to access the write only protected files at this current instant of time. An issue with ID 14174 has already been created in our issue tracking system to look in to the possibility of implementation of this feature. This thread is also linked with the issue, so that you may automatically notify once the issue is resolved.

Actually at the end result I need not a password but some ability to save the presentation so it can be only viewed and can’t be modified; be read-only. ppsx does not really work as one can simply rename it. I saw other post describing that shapes can be made ‘locked’ which prevent their modification. But this will not work for me as those can be un-locked and also new slides can be added even without unlocking.

Maybe there is another option I can use to make the presentation readonly using aspose.slides?

I would like to share that to make the presentation read-only, you can consider to write it with .pps extension rather than .ppt extension.

Now, coming to your requirement of making presentations read only. For this Aspose.Slides offers locks in presentation. These locks can be used to set the presentations in read only mode. You can even create your custom watermark using these locks. This is some unique feature that is even unavailable in PowerPoint as well. Please visit the following link for your kind reference.

.pps (or .ppsx) is not an option. Everybody knows that one need to just change file extension to make it back editable.

Is there an option to protect from adding new slides as well? Seems one can add those to locked presentations, only existing slides are ‘locked’.

I regret to share that the approach shared, protects the existing slide contents but not prevent one from adding new slides when opened in PowerPoint. There is no feature availble in Aspose.Slides to stop adding new slides when opened in PowerPoint. I have created an issue as new feature request with ID SLIDESNET-33373 in our issue tracking system to further investigate the possibility of implementing this feature. This thread has been linked with the issue so that you may be automatically notified once the feature will be available.

I like to share that we have introduced the feature for saving presentation in read only mode and this will stop the viewer from adding new slides to presentation. The feature has been provided in Aspose.Slides for .NET 6.3.0. Please visit this documentation link for your kind reference.
