I am getting the "PowerPoint found unreadable content in" when using a stream and creating a pptx presentation from scratch. Selecting "Yes" opens the presentation with no issues.
If I write it to a directory it works no problem.
this.Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-powerpoint";
this.Response.AppendHeader("Content-Disposition", "Attachment; filename=demo.pptx");
this.Response.Flush();
System.IO.Stream st = this.Response.OutputStream;
presentationEx.Write(st);
// Write the presentation to disk
//presentationEx.Write("c:\\temp\\demo.pptx");

Thanks. That link was a step in the right direction but didn't actually explain that you need to add the Response.End after the PresentationEx.Write(st). Once I did that it works.
Example:
this.Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-powerpoint";

this.Response.Flush();
System.IO.Stream st = this.Response.OutputStream;
