Presentation loading time is too much

Hi there,
As we have shared our concern with you with regards to loading time of Presentation being too much.

For ex:

Even any 3-4 slide PPTX with some normal image or pie chart in it could take around 8-12 seconds even just to load it; i.e;
Presentation presentation = new Presentation(PATH); // takes 8-12 seconds

What measures you are taking to improve this loading time? Can we expect this to get under 500 milliseconds in next few versions of Aspose?

Hello Aspose Team,
We consider this issue as a big issue. We are using Oracle Linux 5 OS (64-bit). Attached Office2013Blank doc takes 4057 milliseconds for statement

long start = System.currentTimeMillis();
Presentation p = new Presentation(inputStream, loadOptions);
System.out.println(System.currentTimeMillis() - start);
Office2013Blank has just 1 slide.

The another attached file (BackgroundStyles LayoutLevel) has 10 slides. It takes around 7365 milliseconds just for creating Presentation instance.

This is unacceptable. Please reduce this time in future versions.

I would like to share with you that the we have worked with the presentation files shared by you and have observed that the time increase is related to the initialization of necessary resources. This applies to first loading, all following loadings are much faster. For example, I have tried the following code on our end and the time taken is 6905 milliseconds for first initialization and 1683 milliseconds for second initialization. We are continually working to improve performance of Aspose.Slides. I request you to please try using following sample code on your end to observe the performance.

Hi Adnan,
We believe that 6.9 seconds for first time loading is still unacceptable. I understand this is necessary for setting up some resources needed, but can you please try to find what is happening underneath? Can we multithread the things? Does the Aspose try to generate the Layout Enumerator? can we optimize it?

Hi Praneeth,

I have observed your comments and like to share that the Adnan has suggested the workaround with you that when you will load the same presentation in secondary iteration, it will consume less amount of time. The underlying issue still remains there and is still unresolved. The reason behind this is that when Aspose.Slides loads the presentation, it loads the complete Document Object Model (DOM) in memory and which takes some time. We are still working on enhancing loading performance and it is a continual and gradually occurring process. We will share the good news with you as soon as the issue will be completely addressed. Secondly, even if you go for multithreading, it is not going to create a difference.

Hi Mudassir,
The workaround - load the same presentation again, would add up some more time, right? We don’t have a situation to load a presentation in background, and who wants to load the same presentation twice just to see good numbers in second time.

I agree that loading up entire presentation would take some time, but what about slow loading? The idea is, “Why load entire presentation at single time, start loading up sequentially or on need basis?”. If this makes sense to Aspose team, I would like to do it for loading PDFs as well. Slow loading for PDFs, firstly first few slides only when asked 100 page presentation to be converted to PDF, then gradually add more slides to the PDF. Basically this can improve your response time drastically.

PS: For you reference, I’m attaching a financial report I found on web, “Air Arabia IR Presentation Q1 2014.pptx”, this took - 183.849 seconds while loading up (new Presentation()) for first time. Our customers will definitely use such presentations, and this is good example of show stopper for us.

What can Aspose do to improve this?

The issues you have found earlier (filed as SLIDESJAVA-34804) have been fixed in this update.

Hi Team,
We are still facing slowness for generating PPT using ASPOSE SLIDES in JAVA.

Presentation presentation = new Presentation(file.getPath());

Can you please help in this as we can’t share the code base for this. We are using 18.11 version of aspose-slides in our pom file.

Please try using latest Aspose.Slides for Java 20.10 on your end and if you encounter any issue, please feel free to share with us. Please do provide us the source presentation, working sample code, machine specification, Java specification, Operating system specification and snapshot of incurring issue if you still find issue after using latest version.
