Using different fonts

I want to explore the possibilities of using different fonts and font variants. The API shows some interesting properties, such as:

FontConfigFile, and
FontPath

…but nothing really in the way of how these can be used.

I am particularly interested in using small-caps font variants. Can anyone help?
