Is there a way to create and/or retrieve a preview image of a word document using Aspose.Word?

Not yet, but we are working on viewing and printing control where this will be possible. Please check back in 2-3 momths or so.

It is implemented to some extent in Aspose.Word.Viewer Beta which is part of normal installation of Aspose.Word. See the demo project and output to the viewer.
We are happy to tell you that the new Rendering Engine has replaced the “old Viewer Beta”. The Rendering Engine can print, save as images or draw onto .NET Graphics object any document page.

In additional, new Rendering engine allows you to convert Word document to PDF directly (without using Aspose.Pdf).
