Subtotaling on Column with Empty Cells Generates Runtime Error

I have a spreadsheet I’m trying to perform subtotaling on, but some of the cells are empty. As it happens, all columns being subtotaled are being sorted first, which results in the empty cells being at the top of the column. When trying to run a subtotal on that column, the API generates an “invalid start row” error.


Attached is a short, self-contained, correct example of how this error occurs.
