Adding and Removing page numbers using aspose.words

Dear All,

We are evaluating aspose.words for one of our requirements where we would like to merge multiple word documents.But, we would like to have a kind of selective pagination on the merged document.

Let us assume that we have 4 documents for merging as below.All of these documents have headers and footers with page numbers.
Doc1 with 10 pages
Doc2 with 20 pages
Doc3 with 5 pages
Doc4 with 5 pages

Requirement : I specify the selective pagination for the merged document as below.
Doc1 with no pagination
Doc2 with pagination
Doc3 with pagination
Doc4 without pagination.

So, I expect my merged document to be as below.
Doc1 -> no page numbers
Doc2 & Doc3 ->page numbers 1-25 after merge
Doc4->No page numbers

I did not find any convenient option in aspose.words to achieve this requirement.It just provides option to restart th page number on the appended document.

I find no option to remove/delete the existing page number. Is there a way to achieve the above requirement?

Thanks for your inquiry.

You can achieve your requirement by using Aspose.Words. In your case, I suggest you please remove the page field from the documents for which you do not want to see the page number fields. After removing page number fields, merge the document by using Document.appendDocument method. Please use the following code snippet to achieve your requirements. Hope this helps you. Thanks for the quick reply. I have tried the solution you suggested and it is working as expected. However, I have some more requirements to be met in the same area and I would require your help in this. They are as below.

1. The code you suggested is removing page numbers from both header and footer.Is it possible to selectively remove the page numbers by specifying header or footer?

2. Is it possible to insert page numbers either in to the header or footer or both if one does not exist during merge of the documents?

1. The code you suggested is removing page numbers from both header and footer.Is it possible to selectively remove the page numbers by specifying header or footer?

HeaderFooter is a section-level node and can only be a child of Section. There can only be one HeaderFooter or each HeaderFooterType in a Section.

If Section does not have a HeaderFooter of a specific type or the HeaderFooter has no child nodes, this header/footer is considered linked to the header/footer of the same type of the previous section in Microsoft Word. When HeaderFooter contains at least one Paragraph, it is no longer considered linked to previous in Microsoft Word.

Yes, you can remove page number field from specific header/footer. I have modified the RemovePageField method for your kind reference. Hope this helps you.

2. Is it possible to insert page numbers either in to the header or footer or both if one does not exist during merge of the documents?

Please use the overloaded DocumentBuilder.insertField method (String, String) to insert a Word field into a document without updating the field result for Page and NUMPAGES as shown in following code snippet.

I'm afraid Aspose.Pdf for Java doesn't support the requested feature at the moment. However, we have already logged a feature request for PDF to DOC/DOCX conversion as PDFNEWJAVA-33135. Our development team has planned this feature in 4.4 release, November 2013. Although this feature has some other dependencies but we are trying our best to implement it as per plan. We will update you via this forum thread as soon as it's implemented and gets available for download.

The issues you have found earlier (filed as PDFNEWJAVA-33135) have been fixed in Aspose.Pdf for Java 9.0.0.
