Do we require MS word to be installed on server

Query 1:
Please let me know if we require word to be installed on the Server as we have two folders on server which are used
1.For storing templates
2.For saving files on server before it is displayed.
Query 2:
Is there a better alternative rather than saving it in the Server as I cant use memory as it contains lot of images and data.

  2. Could you please clarify how you display document? Do you convert it to HTML?
