Editing Styles in an existing document

I have written some code to create a new document and then to edit some predefined styles (normal, header1,2,3 etc) changing the font name and size. I also change the alignment to fully justified. In one style I change the colour also. I then save the document. When I open the document in Word 2010, none of my changes, except the colour change has survived. What am i doing wrong?

I am having to create this entry on my phone, so will edit soon to add my code for reference .

Any ideas gratefully received.
