Maximum length of text fields in shapefile?

its allowing me only 78 characters for text fields in shape file . However in geodatabase file i dont have this restriction . May i know whats the maximum limit?

Thank you for your interest in the Aspose.GIS product.

In shapefiles, attributes are stored in dBase. In this database, the max size of the character fields is 255 bytes. Characters count don’t equal to bytes count. Some strings (Utf-8) of 78 length need all 255 bytes. Please see all restrictions here. Right now we support only dBase III.
