Preselected filter of pivot table is changed after the data area of pivot table has been updated

Hi,

I’m looking for a solution of the following problem:

If the data that matches a preselected filter in a pivot table is removed from the data area of the pivot table, then the value of the previously selected Filter changes to an another value that is still present in the data area (of the same column). This what is expected, since the pivot table is now being filtered by a totally different value than the original preselected value was.
What I expect to happen is, that all previously selected pivot filter filter values that don’t have any matching data rows anymore, just disappear from the filter value dropdown of the pivot table.

If the same test is being performed with just an Excel sheet, not using aspose at all, the pivot filter value (after an update) behaves a as expected when all the filter matching data rows have been removed.
To get this expected effect, in the ‘data’ tab of the pivot table options the value of the dropdown field ‘Number of items to return per field’ must be set to ‘max’.

What we are doing using the aspose.cells library is, we first delete the data area of the pivot table using the aspose.cells ‘deleteRange’ Method. The we fill that area with new data returned by an SQL select statement.

Please revise the following possible solution to the problem (that I came up with)
First check what filter values are being currently set in the pivot table.
Then check if the data area of the pivot table still contains any rows that match all the selected filter values.
Lastly all pivot filter values that don’t have any matching data rows are being removed from the pivot table.

Do you recommend any other approach?
If you know what I need to do, it will help me.

We could partially understand your issue. Do you mean when the filter is removed, all the pivot table starts showing up. Well, when you remove the filter, you should call the following two methods, these should mostly resolve such issues.

PivotTable pt = …;
pt.RefreshData();
pt.CalculateData();

Please explain your issue in more detail with some sample and simple excel files and screenshots. These will help us look into your issue more precisely and we will evaluate it and help you asap. Thanks for your cooperation.

Thanks for your quick response.

I have not implemented my suggested solution yet. I’m a total aspose beginner with no experience. I need to design first a solution approach that could work. Please revise my solution approach (written above in earlier post), and let me know if it’s feasible and if possible suggest any other better way to avoid the problem.

I can provide your with relevant code once I’ve started implementing the solution approach.
Right now I only have the current ‘old’ java code that first clears and then fills the data area of the pivot table. But I think that code most probably will not need to be modified to fix the problem.

The actual current problem is, that once the data of the pivot table is changed, all previously set pivot filters that now don’t have any matching data rows anymore, are not removed from the pivot filter drop down list. Even worse after the data has been updated a totally different filter value than before is now somehow automatically selected in the pivot filter.

Please check the attached source excel, check its data and the pivot table inside it. The pivot table has a filter 3 and 1. Then I changed all 1s into 3 and refresh the pivot table, now the filter only contains 3.

Please check the output excel file to see the new refreshed filter.

Hello,

We solved the problem.

We are now removing (using the aspose cells library), all filter values from the pivot filter that have no matching data rows anymore, by setting their hidden flag to true.
