I had the same requirement recently (Oct 2019)
What I did was
a) replace in the ps document any calls to setpagedevice (including exec) with pop
b) introduce a function to setpagedevice as per my requirements
(which depended on printer and document type and page number)
c) introduce calls to my function after %%Page DCS comments
It works very well. I can do things like switch duplex on and off in the middle of documents,
which I do not think is possible printing directly from MS Word
