Hi,
We’ve
tried to use same excel template to produce two PDF files for comparison. We found the print out for bold type have a great difference.
1.
Excel
save to PDF format, the print out is fine.
The font "MingLiU,Bold" is NOT embedded to the PDF while the bold texts are presented the way we expected in the print out.
2.
Aspose to PDF, poor quality in bold type font.
The font "MingLiU,Bold" is embedded to the PDF for rendering the bold text. But in the print out, the bold texts from Aspose look more bolder than the version created from the Excel.
Is it possible not to embed "MingLiU,Bold" while the bold behavior is still preserved in the PDF? Or any suggestion for making the bold text to be less bolder?
Thanks,
Gil

3) TestFont_AsposeToPDF.pdf - Program’s output file
4) TestFont_ExcelToPDF - Input file saves as PDF

Hi Gil,
Thanks for sharing the additional details. Your issue relates to Aspose.Cells, as Excel to PDF is supported in Aspose.Cells. I am moving your post to the related forum, my colleague from Aspose.Cells will look into the issue and will provide you information accordingly.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
Best Regards,
Hi Gil,
Thank you for contacting Aspose support.
First of all, you are using an older release (8.5.2) of the Aspose.Cells for .NET API for your testing. As we have improved the PDF rendering engine with recent releases of the API, we strongly suggest you to give the latest revision (
8.8.2) a try for both mentioned scenarios and share the resultant PDF files here. Secondly, the problem is related to the specific font, it would be appropriate that you should share the TTF files of the MingLiU font family in an archive for thorough investigation.
That said, I currently do not have the MingLiU font installed on my machine so I searched for it and found 2 different font formats, that is; TTF & TTC. Both formats are supported and should produce similar results however, I was not able to find the Bold and Italic derivatives of MingLiU so I am wondering if you have them available on your machine.
Hi Babar,
Would you mind if I send the font files to your email? I have 4 MingLiU fonts installed on my machine currently. They are in TTC format:
- MingLiU
- MingLiU_HKSCS
- MingLiU_HKSCS-ExtB
- MingLiU-ExtB
(https://www.microsoft.com/typography/fonts/family.aspx?FID=245
)
I do not have the Bold and Italic derivatives of MingLiU installed on my machine.
I have attached 2 resultant files, namely:
1) TestFont_ExcelToPDF - Excel saves as PDF
2) TestFont_AsposeToPDF_2 - Resultant PDF after upgrading Aspose.Cells to 8.8.2.
Thanks and regards,
Gil
Hi Gil,
Thank you for sharing the resultant PDF files.
I had a discussion with the concerned member of the product team on this scenario, and we think that there is no bold variation of the MingLiU font available. In such situation, when text is styled as bold in spreadsheet however, corresponding bold font file is not present, the API simulates the bold font using the regular font file. I believe same is happening in this scenario, that is; Aspose.Cells API is simulating the bold font using the regular MingLiU font. This can also be confirmed using the Fonts tab under PDF Document Properties. As you can see that the font name is displayed as ,Bold, this indicates that the font has been simulated, whereas if it has been -Bold, that shows the bold font has been used without simulation.
Moving forward, the sample spreadsheet you have shared with us does not show major difference when converted to PDF using Aspose.Cells & Excel application. However, the snapshots shown in your original post shows how text has been distorted in Aspose.Cells’ generated PDF. Could you please share that spreadsheet file via an email? You can use the contact button on the post window to send me an email.
Hi Babar,
For your further information, I have attached the spreadsheet and two photos of the printouts illustrating the bold difference. The bold difference is not easily identified by viewing the PDF files on screen, but it is obvious when viewing them on the actual printouts.
In the Aspose-to-PDF output, “MingLiu,Bold” is displayed under the Font tab, meaning the bold font has been simulated. But in the Excel-to-PDF output, “MingLiu,Bold” is not embedded while the boldness is still preserved in the PDF.
It seems to me the way how Aspose.Cells simulates bold text is different from the “Save as PDF” option in Excel. Is there way to reduce/tune the bold weight, or enforce not to embed “,Bold” in the resultant PDF?
Thanks and regards,
Gil
Hi Gil,
Thank you for sharing the new samples.
Upon reviewing your provided samples, I have logged an enhancement ticket with Id CELLSNET-44492 in our database for the product team’s review. Please spare us some time for thorough analysis of the presented behaviour. In the meanwhile, we will keep you posted with updates in this regard.
Hi Gil,
Please note, we have made some improvements regarding the simulation of bold font with the release of
Aspose.Cells for .NET 8.8.2.3. Could you please test the scenario against this release and feed us back with snapshots of the printed documents?
Moreover, we have used the physical printer “HP LaserJet Professional P1106” to test the scenario on our side and found very little difference between the printouts of your shared PDF files generated with Excel & Aspose.Cells APIs.
The issues you have found earlier (filed as CELLSNET-44492) have been fixed in this update.
