Text encoding when saving as Word .doc format

Is it possible to control the text encoding used when saving a document as .doc or .docx format?

What is the standard behavior when inserting text into a .doc/.docx document? I understand Word uses Unicode by default. If I add a block of non-Unicode text such as Shift-JIS into a Word document is it being converted to Unicode automatically? Or is the Shift-JIS encoding maintained within the .doc format?

Thanks for being patient. Please attach your input Word document containing a block of non-Unicode text here for testing. Also, please clarify how would you add a block of non-Unicode text such as Shift-JIS into a Word document. We will investigate the issue on our end and provide you more information.
